Wonderful - One Story, Many Voices is a new transdisciplinary performance blending spoken word, electronic sound, and immersive visuals to portray the experience of queer refugees in the camp of Gorom (South Sudan). Wonderful channels multiple voices—individual, communal, and institutional—to evoke the harsh daily realities, violence, resilience, and hope in these liminal spaces. The piece is grounded in real materials (social media posts, documents) but transforms them to convey emotional truth rather than literal facts. Sound and visuals create abstract environments reflecting confinement and community, while the voice is manipulated electronically to form layers of presence and memory.
This work emphasizes hybrid forms combining storytelling, live sound processing, and digital scenography, highlighting queer refugee struggles in East Africa, marked by structural violence, prolonged uncertainty, and grassroots networks of mutual aid and visibility enabled by social media.
Central to the project is "Wonder," a queer refugee figure and community organizer whose public and private communications reveal a commitment to survival, collective care, and transnational solidarity amid extreme precarity. The work resists pity, instead demanding attentive presence to the tension between promised protection and lived violence, framing hope as an active, shared practice.
